THING LIBRARY APP
A playful lending system that transforms unused objects into shared community resources.
Overview
This project was created during Fanshawe College’s Design 4 Change event, where students partnered with local nonprofits to solve communication and branding challenges. Working as a team of two, we redesigned the homepage for The Thing Library, a community-driven organization focused on sharing resources rather than buying new ones. The goal was to create a clearer, more compelling online presence that better reflected their values and attracted new members.
MY ROLE
As a co-designer, I collaborated equally across all stages of the project, including:
- Conducting stakeholder interviews and clarifying communication goals
- Planning the new site structure and information flow
- Sketching and refining wireframes into a clean visual layout
- Designing high-fidelity mockups with improved hierarchy and storytelling
- Reviewing and editing together to ensure a unified final solution
PROBLEM
The Thing Library’s existing homepage didn’t effectively communicate what the organization offered or why it mattered. The layout lacked structure, the visuals felt outdated, and the messaging wasn’t engaging enough to attract new visitors or raise awareness of the mission. The challenge was to design a modern, compelling homepage that clearly communicated purpose, values, and community impact.
OUTCOME
We designed a clean, modern homepage centered around clarity and storytelling. The revised layout highlights the organization’s mission, introduces new visitors to how the sharing system works, and encourages deeper engagement. By moving from sketches to polished high-fidelity prototypes, we created a more approachable and visually refined web experience that better represents The Thing Library’s goals and values.
